Patrick Treadway

Thanks to North by Northwest Productions, in February 2005 I was fortunate enough to play Lewis Detimore, the president's assassin in End Game, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., James Woods, Peter Greene and Angie Harmon, directed by Andy Cheng.
We shot the assassination scene on an unnaturally cold day. I had four squibs wired, and for some unknown reason, there was no backup, so I had to die in one take. This scared me immensely, having never died by bullet on-screen before. But the stunt coordinator, Al Goto and his stunt team (who were also secret service guys) were such great teachers, and they helped me learn the riddled dance o' death, plus James ("Jimmy") Woods was so supportive (until he filled my chest with lead!), it would have been a little slice of HELL had everyone not been so helpful.

Plus, having James Woods say, "you're getting the parts I used to get" is about the coolest thing a knucklehead like myself can hope to hear!
Anyway, I think the stunt went ok.
(Lying on the ground, (which was like lying on a sheet of ice that day) while they set up and/or discussed the shot(s),   and then not shivering on cue   was about the hardest thing I've ever done).

Cuba props! thank you so much, Arlene "I'll give you a nice cut later" Nagle!!   (Arlene is a talented stylist, and really, really nice - and was of course, just doing her job, but man oh man!     I couldn't cross the street without a short-bus stopping for me)
RealPlayer WMV Trivia note - from IMDB: [Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s] father, Cuba Gooding, was the lead vocalist for the R&B group The Main Ingredient who had a hit with the song "Everybody Plays The Fool".     How cool is THAT? I love that song.      If I'd known, I would have asked him to sign my 45!    ...the record, not the gun.

Shadow of Fear

In 2004, I was "the patsy" - a homeless guy set up to take the fall for Matt Davis in Shadow of Fear with James Spader and Aidan Quinn. The beginning of my greasy-hair career.

I'm not sure why "the patsy" role is uncredited, and can't help but notice that Shane the dog (played by William Shakesbear) got his furry self listed.     Well...           he was brilliant.

Zo, vot, do I gots some kinda agg-zent?

I also don't know why they had someone else loop my voice saying "OK, OK!" a few times in this scene on the escalator. It wasn't a bad v.o... but he's no William Shakesbear.

The Basket The Basket (1999) was my first film project with North by Northwest, tho I'd done many voice-overs, commercials and industrials with them before - and this was, I think, their first completely in-house production. At the audition, I couldn't help but notice the character I was reading for was (originally) named Patrick Treadway, which I took as a good sign. However, after I got the job, I asked the writers if we could change the name to Frederick (after my maternal grandfather), and they graciously agreed.

Peter Coyote used to live in/run a commune in Marin County, CA across the way from my friends the Brewster's commune, and stories of their touch football games provided a nice conversation opener when we met on the set. He is an incredibly nice man, and a consummate professional.

I believe this was also the film debut of my friend, the late Ron Varela, who was also a true professional. We all miss him a great deal. Ron's sense of timing and humor, along with his versatility and willingness to "play the game", gave him opportunities to work on a lot of different projects, some of which I was lucky enough to be a part of.
Here we are between shots on a Tidyman's industrial, playing rotten produce. Ron is the apple.  Ah, the glamour of show biz, right boys?   Trust me, the off-camera produce-chatter shouldn't have been off-camera. We were crying with laughter most of the time.

The 24 Hour Café 1999(?) was an indie written, produced and directed by Marcus McCollum of Oakland Street Films. All copies of this film have been mysteriously (strategically?) kept from me ("everyone thinks I'm paranoid!!"), so I can't tell you anything about it or even if it's viewable. Strangely, no one connected with the film is able to let me see it, either. Two other actors in the film, Heron Furtwangler (distant relative of the famous German orchestra conductor), and Tom Davis have not seen it, yet a third actor, Rebecca Cook, claims to not only have seen it, but says she has secured a copy for me that somehow always happens to be in alternately inaccessible locations. Very mysterious.  UuuuooowweEEoooooo...

In The Video Dead (1987), I played Jimmy D., the only blue zombie to crawl out of an evil television set (the other zombies were rotten-brown and grey).

There are some GREAT bad reviews of this movie all over the internet. My favorites are the ones that call me the "David Bowie zombie"!

Trivia notes
  • Patrick Denver worked on fabrications and makeup, and the first few days of filming, he really helped not only me, but the others zombies (some of whom were really green -nyar har har) feel like we were actually a part of the project, and I'm really grateful to him for that (Yes, yes I know, I'm the Grateful Undead. Ho-de-ho stop me somebody). His enthusiasm is contagious- he does what he loves, and does it really well. For instance, now he's working on sets (scenics) for Robot Chicken (a fan site here). Get the DVD and check out the incredible detail. And wear a diaper, I found that out the hard way.

Patrick Denver's web site, theothersideoftheisland.com lists all kīna great projects you've no doubt seen or you will soon (Moral Orel, Speed, War of the Worlds, Mortal Kombat...)

Bonus fact: Patrick is the son of amazing multiple-cultural-icon Bob Denver
  • Makeup guy Dale Hall, Jr. does the barking v/o's of Chocolate the dying dog.
  • During the filming, I was scheduled as an extra in Howard the Duck (I was a punk rocker!), and so Robert Scott wrote in a new scene in which Jimmy D. and Zoe the human girl (Roxanna Augesen) share a touching moment in the hall...
  • According to this guy, Rocky Duvall (Jeff, the human boy) is Robert Duvall's son. I don't remember that, however, I didn't talk to Rocky about my family, either, so who knows?
Possible fulfillment of some prophecy:
Jimmy D. -
my birthday, January 7.

The David Bowie Zombie!
David Bowie's  birthday, January 8.

Bob Denver's  birthday, January 9.
